The infamous Federal Penitentiary is accessible by the Alcatraz Cruises Ferry, which leaves from Fisherman’s Wharf. Visiting Alcatraz

Originally the location of a Military prison from 1850 to 1933, Alcatraz Island then became home to one of the most famous prisons in the world. Although it was only in operation from 1934 to 1963, the prison became well known due to its picturesque location and famous prisoners. Surrounded by the rough waters of the San Francisco Bay, it was the perfect location to keep prisoners secure and reduce the chances of breaking out. Despite well over a dozen attempts, no prisoner successfully escaped from the prison.
